In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, join us for a screening of the documentary Tsunagu (2024; 26 minutes), directed by local filmmaker Lucy Komori. Following the film, there will be a Q&A with Komori.
About the film: Canadians of Japanese descent have a traumatic shared experience of uprooting and dislocation during World War II. 22,000 Japanese Canadians, including children and women, were forced from their homes and imprisoned in incarceration camps in the interior of BC. Others were sent to labour on sugar beet farms in Alberta and Manitoba. The majority were either born in Canada or naturalized Canadian citizens.
Many families have not shared these experiences with their children and grandchildren. Through the voices of five Japanese Canadians from different generations, Tsunagu, which means "to connect", explores the generational impact of losing this history.
Tsunagu was awarded a grant from TELUS STORYHIVE in 2023. The film was shortlisted for best documentary, best directing and best cinematography at the 2024 Vancouver Asian Film Festival.
Registration is recommended, but drop-ins may be allowed if space permits.
